Ethnic minorities

19.04.2017.

In Zagreb live more than 40,000 members of the 22 ethnic minorities, which is about 5% of the total number of citizens.

The rights of national minorities in the Republic of Croatia are regulated by the Constitutional Act on the Rights of Ethnic Minorities, and in the City of Zagreb by the Statute of the City of Zagreb.

Members of the ethnic minorities participate in public life and in managing local activities throughout ethnic minority councils and representatives of ethnic minorities.

In the City of Zagreb operate nine ethnic minority councils with 25 members and eight representatives of the ethnic minorities.

The Ethnic Minorities Committee operates within the Assembly of the City of Zagreb and deals with the issues related to the realization of the rights of ethnic minorities. Within the Mayor’s Office has been established a special service which, among the rest, deals with the activities related to the realization of the rights of ethnic minorities.

The work and programmes of the ethnic minorities and their representatives are financed, i.e. co-financed from the city budget funds.
